Last night during the 2007 World Series Game 4 it was announced that Alex Rodriguez would be opting out of the final 3 years of his contract.
There has been much speculation, starting at the beginning of Spring Training as to whether Rodriguez would opt out or not. He was given 10 days from the end of the World Series to decide, turns out, he didn’t need to wait long at all. His decision makes him quite possibly the most valuable free agent in baseball history.
He will most certainly sign a contract close to 300 million dollars for 10 years, a staggering amount, far and away the most any baseball player has ever made. This record will eclipse his former record, signed with the Texas Rangers in 2000. That contract was a 10 year contract worth 252 million dollars.
Brian Cashman announced weeks ago that if Alex Rodriguez opted out of his contract, the New York Yankees would not negotiate with him, citing the fact that they would lose 21 million dollars that the Texas Rangers would assume as part of the trade that sent A-Rod to the Yankees.
The question now is, how will this effect the Yankees for next season. With two very valuable free agents already on the brink of leaving, will A-Rods decision set an example for the other two. Jorge Posada and Mariano Rivera have been with the Yankees since the mid 1990’s, winning 4 World Championships with the club. Will they take this as a sign that it’s time to move on?
There are dozen’s of questions left on the table for the 2008 New York Yankees. Add to that, who will play third base for them?
